Little Treats

I do love a bit of a potter around and a bit of a treat.  Small pleasures like taking photos on a sunny day, fresh flowers, and vintage books.  Here are some of my recent small pleasures.

Beautiful roses in a jar.

Graphic seeds on a vintage book cover.

Handmade tiny star planter and petite succulent to live in it.
(From Oh No Rachio).

Pretty pins.
(From Fir & Wren, and The Manchester Bee Co.)

Vintage Aquisitions

I'm a big fan of vintage things, and old things generally.  I love the way they were so beautifully made, how carefully kept.  I like to think of the people who used them, taking delight in collecting used objects together.
These are my September finds.

This beautiful teacup and saucer is so unusually shaped, and I love the simple berry motif.

I love these carefully curated postage stamp albums, particularly the birds and botanic pages.  I do wish I knew what the title said, or even what language it's in...

Two clear ink wells and a cobalt blue poison or medicine bottle.  The ink wells are mid-century and the poison bottle is Victorian.

These are not strictly vintage, though the collage does have vintage pieces, but they are so pretty that I had to show them off!  They were made for me and gifted to me by one of my favourite artists Alexandra Glew.  A lovely surprise in the post and I can't wait to frame them.

I'm such a lucky Rachel!

Famous Bunnies!

The very sweet Laura from Cardboard Cites wrote a lovely feature for her blog including my little bunnies.

Laura actually requested that the little golden brass bunnies were on silver chain, and as you know, I'm a fan of mixed metals.  I thought they looked great and I'm so glad she did too.

Please take a peek around her blog while you're over that way, she has some beautiful pieces and makes amazing mixed media collages. How very clever. ;)

I've had such a lovely time at my Castlefield fairs.  Thank you to all my lovely customers, friends and fellow stallholders who make them super duper lovely!  Looking forward to the future dates as I'll be a regular seller and will be trading each 1st Saturday of the month.:)

 Beautiful old keys.

I love flowers and pop them in old bottles as vases on my stall (and around my house).  Current favourites are anything yellow with lavender and rosemary added from my garden.

These cases have vintage brooches in during the day, and are good storage when packing at the end. ;)

Tatton Flower Show 2014

Tatton flower show is always a sunny day for me.  This is my third time visiting the show, and each time I've been inspired by the beauty of the gardens, and by the knowledge of the exhibitors.  However, this is the first time I've seen Monty Don!

 Planting for bees.

A ferris wheel where every other seat was filled with flowers.

Ah, clematis.
 Pretty little astrantia flowers.

 Yum, churros!

I made a beeswax candle at one of the stands.

 Beautiful chive flowers.

 Purple verbena.

Blue skies.

...and the man himself, the lovely Monty Don!

Victoria Baths

This month I had a table at one of the most beautiful buildings in Manchester, Victoria Baths.

There were some lovely stalls and people, and I was very lucky to have some super duper friends visit me too ;)  I'm hoping they'll have me back for the next one!

The last photo is courtesy of EmmyC as I was silly and didn't take a photo of my own table.  Ooops, thanks Em ;)

Mother's Day

The Magpie’s Daughter is a story that my Mum made up for me when I was small, there were others of course, but this one sounded the prettiest for a jewellery line. I used to love going through her jewellery and laying it all out in rows. She would tell me where she got it and where it had been worn.  Thin Hippy bangles, beautiful 1950s brooches from my Nana, the pearl earrings I wore on my Wedding Day…jewellery is so personal and I love that about it.

As a present this year I'm having an illustration made by a lovely artist of some lyrics from a song that we’ve sung together since I was super small.  I’ll also get her a big bunch of yellow daffodils, it’s traditional!

This post is based on a piece written for the What I Always blog.  For the full post, including other designers, click here.

Recent Finds

This beautiful illustration is has been carefully famed by the previous owner.  The tape around the sides is blue and a little worn, and I adore it!  The little ink well is a chunky little addition to my growing antique bottle collection.

I can't resist a beautiful vintage book, particularly a classic.  This 1921 edition even has the previous four owners names written in ink on the inside.  Thank you to Vivienne, Jeanne, Shirley and Betty.  The key is French apparently, but I just loved its patina and the little red cord.  I have a few keys, some vintage, one porcelain, that I will one day hang together or pretty hooks in my hallway.  One day.

This Chanel bottle belonged to my Great Aunt, who then gave it to my Mother.  It still has a tiny drop of perfume in.  This is one of my most precious possessions.

Ah tins, can you have to many?  This lovely find is a Cadbury tin from the Coronation.  It will probably end up storing buttons in as I love those too!  Tee hee.

Top to bottom:
Framed book illustration and ink well from Stockport Vintage Fair.
Shakespeare book from a street seller near the Universities.
Chanel bottle from my Mother.
French key and Cadbury tin with the Queen on from ebay.
